Police leadership told the council the department has had aging vehicles and high maintenance demands; the chief said vehicles commonly begin to show major maintenance needs after about 80,000 miles under local patrol conditions. The purchase is intended to reduce continuous 24‑hour usage of remaining vehicles and improve fleet reliability.
Staff said the purchases will be paid from available fund balance rather than added to the tax rate, and estimated the department’s required reserve remains intact after the planned purchase. The chief said outfitting time from vendors could add about four to six months before vehicles are fully operational.
Council approved the purchase by motion and voice vote.
