Daviess County courthouse renovation on track for move-in next week, budget unchanged

Daviess County officials said the courthouse renovation is largely complete and staff will begin a staged move-in next week, with the project still at its original budget of $13,724,000.
Derek, a county staff member who gave the construction update, said on Tuesday that “the courtroom is completely functional” and that Hudson’s has installed most furniture on the Third Floor. He said some final millwork and two retrofit gates for the jury box remain and were expected to arrive “at the latest, I think, Tuesday next week.”
The update said specific rooms on the Third Floor — the judge’s chambers, court reporter’s room and jury room — are complete. On the Second Floor Hudson’s had installed about 60% of furniture and installers were finishing the clerk’s workspace. On the First Floor contractors were finishing life-safety systems and public entrances so the building can be operable while office fit-out continues.
The county reported security and IT systems are in place. Derek said, “SAS has been on-site for the past week...the security system is up and running,” and that county staff had wireless access points and Internet service working. The state fire marshal was scheduled to do final testing on Thursday to allow the move-in process to start on Monday.
Financial figures presented at the meeting showed the project remains at the originally approved project cost of $13,724,000. Derek said the construction contingency stood at $63,799 and that pending change orders would lower it to roughly $41,668; the soft-cost contingency remained $65,931.
The county outlined a one-week-per-department move plan beginning with the circuit court on the Third Floor, followed by superior court and the magistrate/referee courtroom, then probation or clerk’s departments and, finally, prosecutors on the First Floor.
Officials did not take action during the update; commissioners asked for continued status reports as move-in progresses and for staff to manage remaining finish items and contingencies.
The county did not provide firm dates for when the final contingency changes become official; staff said they will report those adjustments in future updates.
