County to present SunTrail design for A1A Beach Boulevard; construction funding not secured

The county received about $26 million from the DOT for SunTrail projects countywide, and one of the planned projects is a trail segment on Beach Boulevard, Greg Caldwell, public works director for St. Johns County, told Dylan Rumrill, mayor of the City of St. Augustine Beach. "The DOT gave the county about $26,000,000 to do Sun Trail projects throughout the county," Caldwell said. "That design effort is about to go in front of the board of county commissioners on July 22 to get that contract underway."
The project would initially fund design work only; county officials said they expect to request construction funding from DOT in the coming years. Caldwell described an early concept as an "8 to 12 foot wide multi use path." "Right now, we only have funding for design," he said. "...we're gonna get back to them to get construction dollars, in the next couple years."
Caldwell said the county and the city have a strong working relationship and want to improve pedestrian access along A1A Beach Boulevard. "Number one thing that we wanna do is always improve pedestrian access along A1A Beach Boulevard," he said. Dylan Rumrill, mayor of the City of St. Augustine Beach, noted existing crosswalks and lighting on the corridor and said the city values the county's partnership on pedestrian safety.
Next steps identified in the discussion are the county presenting the design contract to the Board of County Commissioners on July 22 and pursuing construction funding afterward. No formal contract was approved at the meeting and no construction schedule or guaranteed construction funding was announced.
