City Manager Jordan Barber asked the City Commission on June 23 to pause planned construction of a gym at the East End and reallocate $2 million of previously earmarked funds toward immediate improvements at Champions Park while staff organizes public workshops to develop a broader recreation facilities plan.
Barber said the city currently holds $6 million from prior allocations (roughly $5 million from “wild spaces” funds plus $1 million of ARPA funding) reserved for a gym expansion that would add two courts at the East End. He told commissioners the two-court expansion is insufficient for projected needs and suggested redirecting $2 million now to address critical infrastructure at Champions Park — including nets, restroom and utility repairs — while engaging the public and commissioners in a larger, multi-year vision for recreational facilities and potential grant matching.
Barber proposed that staff immediately schedule workshops, develop renderings and pursue matching grants; he said crews will replace nets in July and address tripping hazards and restroom repairs as immediate actions. Commissioners voiced support and also discussed seeking county partnership funding over a multi-year timeframe. Commissioner Maison moved to authorize staff to begin the work and schedule workshops; Commissioner Long seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Barber said staff will begin grant-seeking and coordination with the county and return to the commission with a phased plan and cost estimates.
