Flooding washes away section of Ocean Waterbury Road; county to assess long‑term fixes

Road and Bridge staff told the Miami County commission June 11 that flooding last week washed away roughly a third of Ocean Waterbury Road south of 7 Highway between 7 Highway and 390 Ninth, and the county has closed the section while it evaluates repairs.
"We're about a third of it there in the south end completely washed away. We lost the entire road. It is currently closed at this time," Road and Bridge staff said. They described repeated past problems in the area and said frequent re‑rocking has been the historical response after heavy rains.
Staff said the county will perform traffic counts, collect past cost data for repeated rock placement and evaluate whether rebuilding, improved culverts or other fixes would be justified given usage and cost. Staff also noted crossroad culverts in the washed section were ripped out and damaged by the flood and that a nearby creek floods back over the roadway, carrying gravel into the creek and creating a persistent mud hole.
The county will continue to keep 390 Ninth open while the cut‑through section remains closed and will bring a recommendation to the commission in the coming months after the data collection and cost analysis. No timeline or funding decision for a permanent fix was made at the meeting.
