Brevard board approves promotions and delegates temporary authority to appoint principals during summer recess

The board recognized Joe Flora’s promotion to director of school improvement in curriculum and instruction. Flora thanked board members and district leaders and acknowledged his family and current faculty at Space Coast Junior‑Senior High School.
Cleveland Reed was promoted to director of transportation. In brief remarks, Reed thanked supporters and the transportation team and said, “Let’s get started,” as he described plans to improve district transportation operations.
The board also introduced Wendy Honeycutt as the new principal at Croton Elementary School; Honeycutt thanked district officials and said she looked forward to starting work.
Principal vacancy and delegation motion District staff told the board the promotions create a vacancy at Space Coast Junior‑Senior High School. Because the board does not meet again for five weeks, Superintendent Dr. Rendell asked the board to delegate limited authority to him to appoint principals as necessary between June 24 and July 29 so schools have leaders in place for summer planning and the start of the school year. He said he would consult with each board member before making appointments.
The board approved the delegation by roll call vote; the motion specified that appointments would be made in writing, that the superintendent would consult with board members, and that any appointments would be formally presented for ratification at the July board meeting.
Why it matters Board members said the short-term delegation is intended to prevent gaps in school leadership and ensure principals have time to prepare for staff and student returns. The board also publicly acknowledged the work of the promoted administrators and thanked them for service to students and the district.
