The Jefferson County Commission reauthorized participation in two state-authorized sales-tax holidays — the back-to-school holiday and a severe-weather preparedness holiday — with staff explaining the law now requires annual approval.
County revenue staff told commissioners the combined estimated cost is about $200,000 in total tax and an estimated $70,000 impact to the county general fund. Commissioners were told that the county had participated in the back-to-school holiday for several years under prior law, but a statutory change now requires an annual resolution to remain in effect.
"Previously, the law, if you choose to do it, you were doing that each year without having to re up it every year. Now you pretty much have to pass a resolution each year," a county official said. Revenue staff explained the $200,000 estimate covers both the back-to-school and severe-weather holidays and that the cost has been budgeted in prior years.
Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution to participate; the motion carried by voice vote. Staff said the severe-weather holiday timing differs (it typically occurs at a different point in the calendar) and that eligible items for that holiday include weather radios, batteries and flashlights.
The commission approved the annual reauthorizations the same day it advanced other budget and procurement items.
