The Garden City Commission approved a one-day exemption to city code to allow possession, consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages and cereal malt beverages at the Garden City Parks & Recreation Department's Beef Empire Days tailgate event.
Parks & Recreation Director asked the governing body to waive code section 6-1 for a beer garden to be operated by a local company during the June 8 family event at Stevens Park. Staff said the event will include family activities and a hamburger feed in addition to the beer garden.
After a motion and second, commissioners voted to grant the requested exemption for the event date. Staff noted the request was for a single day and that the event sponsor must comply with any licensing, public-safety and vendor requirements.
Why it matters: The exemption allows a sanctioned beer garden at a city event and requires organizers to follow temporary-liquor rules and vendor licensing; the decision removes enforcement uncertainty for that single event on June 8.
Implementation notes: The city clerk's office will ensure required permits and vendor approvals are in place before the event.
