Alger B. Wilkins High School awards diplomas to Class of 2025

Cumberland County Schools officials and school leaders presided over the Alger B. Wilkins High School commencement ceremony for the Class of 2025, where diplomas were conferred and student achievements recognized.
The ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance led by Nair Spencer Crumpler and remarks from school administrators. Dr. Valerie Martin, the school principal, introduced district and school officials from Cumberland County Schools who were present to recognize the graduates. Officials in attendance included Deanna Jones, board chair; Judy Musgrave, vice chair; and district administrators identified as associate superintendents, assistant superintendents, the chief academic officer and the board attorney. Speakers emphasized resilience and second chances for students and thanked teachers, families and staff for their support.
The school recognized Layla (Zayla) McVay as the valedictorian and Neziah Hopkins as the salutatorian. Student speakers delivered addresses reflecting on challenges overcome, gratitude for support systems and encouragement for classmates as they move to college, the workforce or military service.
During the diploma presentation, Dr. Martin declared the candidates graduates “by the power vested in me by the state of North Carolina and the Department of Public Instruction,” and instructed students to turn their tassels from right to left. A roster of graduates was read aloud to the audience. The ceremony concluded with the traditional instruction to hold applause until the turning of the tassels and the exit of stage guests and graduates.
