Commissioners direct staff to market county property/casualty and health plans

Miami County commissioners asked county staff to solicit market proposals to evaluate the county’s property and casualty insurance as well as health-insurance options.

A commissioner said about a month earlier he had pressed to "market our property and casualty insurance" to evaluate cost and coverage. He said the county has used pooled arrangements such as K Works and K Camp (workers’ compensation and property/casualty pool models) and asked staff to begin the marketing process to evaluate alternatives and potentially find local providers. "If we could get a local company that's similar cost, that would be worth evaluating," Commissioner Vickery said.

Commissioners directed Lucas Mellinger, assistant county administrator, to begin assembling materials and to release the market solicitation if the commissioners concurred. Mellinger confirmed he would start the process. The commission did not approve specific changes to policy or coverage at the meeting; it only authorized staff to gather market proposals and report back.
