Gateway Unified proposes in‑district adult education program to improve access

Kyle (staff member) said that over the past decade Shasta Union High School District had provided adult education for Gateway students but that distance and administrative separation created barriers. “One of the things we've talked about is getting that back here under our district so that we could have oversight,” he said, explaining that district control would make services more accessible to students who need diploma completion or other adult‑education services.
Staff said the program will start small and work with the adult education consortium for seed funding. The district is exploring facility options—including Mountain Lakes and other available local space—and will coordinate with alternative education to identify students who could benefit. Board members asked about program size and funding; staff said current counts are uncertain because prior services were provided offsite and that local demand may be higher than district records indicate.
The board moved and seconded a motion to approve the Gateway Adult School proposal; the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said next steps include working with the consortium on funding, determining facilities and beginning enrollment outreach.
