City launches summer workshops for Chelsea Onward master plan; officials report strong initial engagement

City staff told the Chelsea City Council they are kicking off summer engagement for the Chelsea Onward (Palante) comprehensive master plan and reported substantial early participation: more than 640 survey responses, which the city said represents over 1.5% of Chelsea’s population and outpaces similar regional processes at the same stage.
The city announced three community workshops: a Spanish-language in-person workshop at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25 at the Williams School (Spanish with English translation available), an English-language in-person workshop at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 26 at Metro Credit Union (English with Spanish translation available), and an online workshop at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9 via Zoom.
City staff and councilors said organizers are offering separate Spanish and English surveys and tailoring meeting times to reach different audiences; staff reported that Spanish respondents prioritized housing while English respondents emphasized environmental issues, and that offering daytime in-person options and evening and online options aims to increase participation across work schedules and household responsibilities.
Council members encouraged residents to attend and praised the outreach. Councilor Jimenez Rivera noted the survey response rate and commended the city manager’s team for engagement efforts. Councilor Brown called the outreach “an opportunity” and urged residents from across neighborhoods to attend.
The workshops will address housing, public safety, traffic and congestion, education, jobs and other topics identified in the master-plan scoping memo. The city said it will circulate meeting notes and a memo of materials to council members after each workshop.
