Committee approves resolution designating June 24 as Romanian Blouse Day after heated debate over scope of resolutions

HARRISBURG — The House Tourism, Recreation and Economic Development Committee voted 16–10 to report House Resolution 205, which designates June 24, 2025, as Romanian Blouse Day in Pennsylvania. The measure prompted an extended and at times contentious debate over the committee’s use of resolutions.
Rep. Bridal, the sponsor, framed the measure as recognition of a living cultural tradition and an economic opportunity for heritage tourism. "The traditional Romanian blouse is more than just a garment. It is a living symbol of cultural identity, artistry, and intergenerational heritage," Bridal said, adding that celebrating the blouse connects culture, creativity and community and can boost heritage tourism.
Committee debate split along lines of principle and priorities. Committee Chair James said she considered the series of similar resolutions "superfluous" and said the panel should focus on core legislative work. "I find our 5, resolutions this morning to be superfluous. They do nothing noticeable for the advancement of Pennsylvania," Chair James said.
Other members strongly defended the resolution as recognition of constituents and local economic activity. Rep. Young said the committee should "highlight as many great things as possible so that our constituents can feel that we are hearing their voices," and added, "People need hope. People need to know that we hear them." Rep. Peter Freitas, who spoke in favor, said there is a two‑day Romanian cultural event in Berks County and urged colleagues to participate.
Rep. Jones pushed back sharply, arguing the chamber cannot adopt recognitions for every cultural element and questioned where the line should be drawn. "When it comes to the amount of time that we spend on resolutions ... we cannot possibly recognize every single piece of everybody's culture," Jones said.
After debate the committee took a roll call and voted to report the resolution as committed. The roll call in the transcript recorded 16 ayes and 10 nays; sponsors said the resolution aims to promote cultural events and local economic development in communities with Romanian heritage.
