Sylvania board commends students, staff and teams including national esports champions and lifesaving acts

The Sylvania Board of Education used its June 23 meeting to recognize a broad set of student and staff achievements, including state qualifiers, all-state athletes, academic competitors and staff credited with lifesaving actions.
Superintendent Dr. Marley and board members called students and staff to the front of the meeting for board commendations. The board recognized Scott Carver and Cameron Bernath for lifesaving actions on March 16, 2024, when they stabilized an official who had collapsed during a boys’ lacrosse game. The board also commended Peggy Marchand for performing the Heimlich maneuver on March 21, 2025, at Maplewood Elementary School and saving a third-grade student.
The board recognized a long list of athletic and academic accomplishments: state qualifiers and all-state athletes in track and field (including placements in discus and the 800 meters), Power of the Pen state qualifiers, a student author who published a fourth book, Science Olympiad state qualifiers who placed seventh as a team, and the McCord 4x800 relay team that placed third at state. The board highlighted Northview’s esports squads — Super Smash and Overwatch 2 — which won national championships at the League OS Scholastic National Championship held at Maryville University in St. Louis; individual team members and coaches were named and called up for recognition.
A motion to commend those listed under agenda item 3.1 was moved and seconded and the board approved the commendations on the record.
