Board approves Crossroads optional flexible school day program, waivers, mission and policy updates

At its regular meeting the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District board approved several governance and program items: continued participation in the Texas Education Agency optional flexible school day program for Crossroads Academy, two TEA waiver applications, adoption of updated mission/vision/beliefs statements, and acceptance of TASB policy updates.

The optional flexible school day program, authorized under Texas Education Code and TEA rules, allows Crossroads Academy to offer personalized schedules to eligible students for credit recovery and dropout prevention; trustees approved the district’s application for 2025–26. The board also approved the staff development waiver and the Teacher Data Portal waiver that allow alternative professional-development minute accounting and data-system use consistent with TEA rules.

The nut graf: trustees furthered district governance by adopting a community-developed mission, vision and belief statements intended to shape recognition and culture work, and accepted recommended TASB policy updates with two local modifications discussed at the meeting.

Board members reviewed the statements developed with stakeholder input and voted to adopt them as presented. The new mission reads in part, "Empowering bold leaders to shape the future," a statement trustees said will guide employee recognition and district culture work going forward. The board also approved TASB policy updates after discussing a local provision about compensation for employees called in during emergency closures; the district elected to retain a local provision ensuring overtime/time-and-a-half in those circumstances.

All items on the governance slate were approved unanimously.
