Public works committee tables request to reserve parking behind old library for prospective tenants

The City of Mayville public works committee on June 23 discussed a request to designate eight parking stalls in the municipal lot behind the old library for tenants of that building, including a potential lease with Edward Jones. The committee tabled the request for additional specifics.

Applicant Nathan Watts described a likely configuration of three to four business suites and said Edward Jones has a lease contingent on designated parking and accessible handicap parking. Staff and committee members noted that the property remains city owned and that any change of use or occupancy normally requires planning-commission review to ensure off‑street parking standards are met or that municipal parking within 100 feet can serve as the required off‑street parking.

Committee members discussed precedents in town — temporary parking designations for other downtown properties and designated handicap stalls near other businesses. Members flagged practical questions that must be resolved before action: the number of stalls needed by tenant mix (estimates ranged from 3–4 up to 10–12), whether the city would charge a yearly permit fee, and whether the city should consider selling the lot instead of continued municipal ownership and maintenance.

Because no buyer or finalized tenant list was before the committee, members moved to table the item until the applicant can provide written lease contingencies, a confirmed buyer/tenant list and precise parking needs. The motion to table passed; staff said the topic would return to committee when specifics are available and the planning process can proceed.
