Board schedules town hall and special July meeting; remote participation, personnel and grant items noted

At a June 23 special review session, Niagara Falls City School District leaders outlined scheduling and administrative items ahead of the district's summer calendar and school-year start.

The board confirmed two upcoming July meetings: the annual reorganization on July 1 and a special meeting tentatively set for July 31 to consider a final smart-device policy and a personnel report. Officials said trustees will receive a bound packet of resolutions and a personnel report on the Thursday preceding the July 1 meeting and were asked to submit any questions to staff before the next meeting.

The district told the board it will continue a remote participation (video conferencing) policy on a year-to-year basis, preserving the option for board members to attend remotely with the same caveats used in recent years. The presenter said the recommendation followed consultation with the board president and vice president and emphasized that the district has had strong in-person attendance.

Staff highlighted several administrative items the board will address in coming meetings: a vacant citizen seat on the audit committee; the reappointment of routine administrative roles (internal claims auditor, clerk, and other fiscal functions); short-term summer contracts funded by grants (examples included targeted summer programming at Gaskill and school-improvement activities); and additions to the P-TECH grant that will affect roughly 225 Niagara Falls High School students.

The board also was notified of four confidential settlements involving child-victim cases that were discussed in executive session; the district said settlements are brought to the board in confidential session and will be approved in public vote as required, but the presentation did not disclose settlement details. The June 23 meeting closed with a move into executive session for personnel and negotiation matters; the presenter said no public action would follow the session.

Other items noted during the review session: the district's internal claims auditor reviewed $20 million in claims for May with no findings; the presenter thanked Dr. Saveggio, a visiting physician who attends once weekly; the district announced student and extracurricular highlights (LaSalle and Gaskill placements at a regional tech competition and VEX robotics trips); and the board introduced its new ad hoc student board member, Harjot Khour, an 11th grader who will give monthly student reports but will not vote or attend executive session.

Ending: Officials asked trustees to review the July materials when they arrive and to contact administrators with questions ahead of the July meetings. The district said it will post the smart-device town-hall recording and provide a policy update at the next regular meeting.
