MMSD approves 2.95% base wage increase for teachers and support staff; one board member recuses

The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education on June 23 approved funding a 2.95% base-wage increase for multiple employee units — including the Madison Teachers Inc. Educational Support Employees Association, the teachers unit, the substitute unit and the trades unit — effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.
The motion passed with one recusal: a board member cited a conflict of interest and did not vote on the measure. Board members praised the negotiated increase as an investment in recruiting and retaining staff; several also urged the state legislature to provide more adequate public-school funding.
“This is necessary and important,” board member Nikki VanderMeelen said when stating her support. Vice President Pearson and others also thanked district negotiators and staff for reaching the agreement.
The board recorded the final motion with a 6–0–1 result; the legal counsel requested the record note the vote as “6‑0‑1.” The raises will be administered through the district’s payroll and human resources processes as part of the 2025–26 budget.
