Resident urges Uvalde CISD to sell Slate Creek property as budget committee recommended

Diana Olvero Caru, a member of the public, told the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District board of trustees during the open forum that the district should proceed with selling Slate Creek properties to help close the district’s budget gap.
"The consensus of the group was that the district sell Slate Creek properties," Diana Olvero Caru said, describing the budget committee’s recommendation and noting that the committee of 64 included district staff, administrators, principals, teachers and 14 community members. She told trustees the district had no teachers living in that property and questioned the claim that the site is a teacher-recruitment tool.
The comment came during the meeting’s public comment period and was directed to trustees as they reviewed budget options in a workshop presentation from finance staff. The board did not take action on the comment at the meeting; Benderly later said appraisals for district properties will be brought to the board for a future decision about sales.
Why it matters: Selling district property would provide one-time revenue that could be applied to the fund balance or to one-time needs, but Benderly and trustees cautioned that proceeds are not a recurring revenue source and therefore cannot sustainably replace ongoing operating revenues.
