Council approves modest parking rate increases for meters and beach blocks

Atlantic City’s City Council voted on June 18 to increase some parking rates for on-street meters and off-street parking kiosks, including higher hourly rates in certain beach-block areas.
Director Finch told the council the ordinance “is just taking the existing kiosks and increasing from a dollar to a dollar 50 or $2 to $2.50 throughout the area.” He also said the city’s share of the increase would remain roughly the same percentage as before.
Several council members debated the change. One council member said she supported adding a meter block near the Golden Nugget area but opposed rate increases that might deter foot traffic. Councilman Kurtz and Councilman Tibbitt recorded “no” votes; other council members voted in favor. The clerk recorded the final result as six affirmative votes and two negative votes on the measure.
Supporters on the dais argued updating rates was appropriate in light of private lot pricing and to better manage curb turnover in busier blocks; opponents said the city should avoid measures that could discourage beach and boardwalk visitors and urged the administration to compare municipal rates with local private lots before second reading.
Ordinance 35 advanced after the council’s roll call. The administration agreed to review local private lot pricing ahead of the ordinance’s next hearing.
