Atlantic City council moves forward with Claridge Hotel redevelopment plan

Atlantic City’s City Council on June 18 reviewed a redevelopment plan for the Claridge Hotel that combines substantial rehabilitation of the existing hotel with new residential construction on an adjacent surface parking lot.
Planning staff told the council the project will “substantially rehabilit[e] the existing Claridge Hotel, and new construction, which is immediately to the north of the existing Claridge Hotel.” The presentation said the work will be phased and that the new construction and the renovated hotel will include residential units and a percentage of affordable housing.
The plan presentation focused on site layout, parking and the program for the new structure on the former surface parking area. A council member asked whether the new structure would include parking below it or rely on nearby garages; planning staff said “parking will be made available for the units of the new construction as well.” The council also asked whether the new structure is intended for long-term residents or mixed use; staff said the existing hotel will retain hotel units while both the rehabbed building and the new construction will include residential units, with affordable units included in the mix.
Council members raised questions about the plan image included in the packet and asked staff to confirm the location and orientation of the new building (the presentation identified the lot as bounded by Pacific and Indiana avenues). Planning staff said the redevelopment will be built in phases and that the section before the council addressed rehabilitation and new residential construction.
The ordinance to authorize the redevelopment plan (Ordinance 6F) was introduced on first reading and advanced; the council recorded an 8-0 vote on first reading.
The council did not adopt final zoning controls or building permits at the meeting; staff said details about parking allocation and other site controls are addressed in the redevelopment plan documents and will be resolved as the project proceeds through permitting and subsequent approvals.
Council members asked staff to provide clearer, larger project drawings for the next hearing so members and the public can better see proposed building locations and access points.
