Council advances Claridge Hotel redevelopment plan, including rehab and new residential construction

The Atlantic City Council advanced a redevelopment ordinance for the Claridge Hotel site on June 18, moving Ordinance 6f out of committee and onto the first‑reading calendar.

A planning official told council members the proposal calls for substantial rehabilitation of the existing Claridge Hotel and new construction immediately north of the hotel on a surface parking lot bounded by Pacific and Indiana avenues. "The proposed redevelopment plan is actually a substantial rehabilitation of the existing Claridge Hotel, and new construction, which is immediately to the north of the, of the existing Claridge Hotel," the planning director said. He added that parking will be provided for the new units and that the project will include a percentage of affordable apartments.

Council members asked for clarification about uses in the new structure and parking arrangements; the planning director said the rehabilitation will retain hotel rooms while creating new residential units in both the rehabbed hotel and the new construction. The plan will be built in phases and includes affordable‑unit commitments.

What it means: If the plan proceeds through the council’s redevelopment process and secures required permits and financing, the Claridge site would see both a refurbished historic hotel component and newly constructed residential units, some set aside as affordable housing.

Next steps: The ordinance was advanced on first reading; the council recorded an 8–0 vote to move the redevelopment plan forward. The administration will proceed with required land-use steps and any environmental or parking studies tied to the phased construction.
