Mount Pleasant adopts formal traffic-sign installation policy

The Village Board adopted a traffic-sign installation policy on June 23, 2025, after public-works staff presented a uniform procedure and standardized request form for analyzing and approving traffic signs, particularly stop-sign requests.
Tony Beyer (Public Works) told the board the policy references national warrants and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices to provide measurable criteria staff will use when evaluating requests. The policy includes a citizen-submission form that will let engineering staff compare intersections to the criteria (counts, sight lines, speed and crash history) and make defensible recommendations to approve or deny signs.
Board members praised the policy as a consistent, objective framework that will prevent ad-hoc sign placement and set a common standard for public works and police; Trustee Karas and others said the policy can be revised later as experience dictates. The motion to adopt the policy passed on roll call. Public works will begin using the form and procedures for future sign requests.
