The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees met in closed session Monday, June 23, to hear a level 3 grievance appeal under local policy DGBA and Texas Government Code sections 551.071 and 551.074. The board returned to open session and discussed next steps, but was told the requested remedy had already been granted and no further board action was required.
“Closed meeting to hear the policy DGBA local level 3 grievance hearing response appeal of employee complaint of VK, an employee at the district service center under Texas Government Code sections 551.071 and 551.074,” Board President Nadeau announced before the closed session at 6:12 p.m., according to the meeting record.
After the closed session, legal counsel Blanco briefed trustees on options and the status of the grievance. “As mister Blanco explained, the requested remedy, has already been granted with there being no action for this board to take then,” the record shows.
Board member Woodcraft asked Superintendent Vasquez to explore three items as the district moves forward: whether the policy and human-resources committees can review and potentially streamline grievance procedures; reviewing the timeline and regularity of employee performance evaluations; and the feasibility of conducting a district climate survey. Woodcraft said the goal was to ensure employees receive timely feedback and to identify any procedural gaps. Vasquez responded that he could “definitely take a look at all of those,” per the transcript.
No motion or formal vote was recorded on the grievance at the open meeting. The board adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
The record indicates the grievance procedure was handled through closed session deliberations, the remedy the employee sought was implemented before trustees took a formal vote, and trustees requested administrative follow-up on grievance process review and personnel-review practices.
