Socorro ISD trustees recognize students, teams for congressional art, UIL and district awards

Socorro Independent School District trustees honored dozens of students and teams June 23 for achievements in the congressional art competition, UIL academics and athletics, recycled-art contests and student council awards; district staff said photos and event materials will be posted online.
Daniel Escobar, chief communications officer for Socorro Independent School District, presented recognitions to dozens of students and teams during a special Board of Trustees meeting Monday, June 23. “It is my pleasure to introduce tonight's recognitions,” Escobar told the board before calling recipients to the front for photographs.
The awards included winners of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition, recycling-themed art from the Green Hope Project's Trash to Treasure contest, UIL academic state qualifiers, UIL athletic district champions and multiple student councils that earned the National Gold Council of Excellence.
In the 2025 Congressional Art Competition, Escobar said second- and third-place winners in the 16th Congressional District were from Eastlake and Montwood High Schools; the first-place winner from Socorro High School was selected by the office of Congressman Tony Gonzalez and will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol this summer. Escobar named Brooklyn Rodriguez of Montwood High School and Adali Baez of Socorro High School among the honorees.
District staff also recognized winners of the Trash to Treasure recycled-art contest, naming students from Mission Ridge Elementary (Ian Chaites Marquez), Hernando Middle School (Julissa Marin), John Drugan School (Jaden Quinn), Fuentes Middle School (Pablo Aldaco) and America’s High School (Uriel H. Luz).
The board honored students who represented the district at the 2025 UIL academic state contest, including Alejandro Beltran (Socorro High School) and Alyanna Acuna (El Dorado High School). Elementary and middle school student councils from multiple campuses were recognized for excellence across TASC project areas; Escobar listed representatives from Cactus Trails, Doctor Susuk, Helen Ball, Mission Ridge, Eastlake, Montwood and William D. Slider among others.
The board presented championship recognitions to several district athletic teams. America's High School softball was recognized as the 5A district champion with a season record of 22-17 (9-3 district). Eastlake High School softball was honored as the 6A district champion with a 25-14 overall record (6-6 district). El Dorado High School's baseball team was recognized as the 5A district champion with a district record of 7-5. America's High School baseball was honored for district and area championships, reaching the Sweet 16 and finishing the season ranked No. 10 in the 5A Division I rankings.
Escobar noted photographers from the district would post event photos to the district’s online account for free, high-resolution download. After the recognitions, the board moved to a closed session on unrelated business.
The meeting record shows the recognitions were presented publicly; no formal board action was required for the awards.
