Phoenix details bulk trash pickup rules; residents must schedule online

A City of Phoenix Public Works staff member told residents to schedule bulk trash pickups at phoenix.gov/bulktrash and to set piles no earlier than seven days before a scheduled appointment, placing items within five feet of the front edge of the property so city tractors can collect them without entering yards.

The guidance, provided by the Public Works staff member, is intended to keep sidewalks clear, protect collection equipment and crews, and make pickups efficient. The city also provided size limits and a list of prohibited items to reduce safety risks and processing problems.

Residents may place bulk items neatly within five feet of the front edge of their property, but piles must not block sidewalks, the staff member said. Items should also be kept at least five feet away from fixed objects such as cars, fences or mailboxes. The city allows up to 10 cubic yards of bulk trash per collection — the city described that roughly as a pile measuring about 17 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet.

Certain materials are not accepted; the staff member directed residents to the city website for the full list and specifically mentioned concrete, dirt, tires and panes of glass as examples of unacceptable items. If a property has a front wall or fence, the city said residents may place the pile in the driveway.

For unusual property situations, residents were asked to contact the city at (602) 262-6251 for guidance. Long items such as tree branches should be cut to less than 4 feet in length and less than 12 inches in diameter to be accepted for pickup.
