Boston hearing in Hyde Park spotlights medical desert, pushes for community health center

Councilor John Fitzgerald, chair of the Boston City Council Committee on Public Health, Homelessness, and Recovery, opened an off‑site hearing in Hyde Park on June 12 to gather community testimony about health access in the neighborhood.

The hearing focused on residents’ long‑standing lack of a federally qualified community health center and on immediate gaps in mental health, maternal care, chronic disease prevention and emergency response. Councilor Enrique Pepin, sponsor of docket 0306, said, "Hyde Park is one of the few neighborhoods in the city of Boston without a community health center, and boy do we need it." He and steering‑committee members called for a sustained city and hospital partnership to build a center "that says we value our residents."

Why it matters: Community speakers and public health staff described Hyde Park as a local “medical desert,” with above‑average diabetes and heart‑disease hospitalizations, the city’s highest infant mortality rate and limited public‑transportation access to specialty care. Crystal Garcia, director of policy for the Boston Public Health Commission, told the committee that "95 percent of Hyde Park residents have health insurance, with 54 percent of them insured by MassHealth," and said community health centers are central to the commission’s health‑equity work.
