Planning and Zoning Board recommends city adopt Charlotte County public‑information program to support lower flood‑insurance rates

The Punta Gorda City Planning and Zoning Board on June 23 unanimously recommended that city council adopt the Charlotte County Program for Public Information as part of the Community Rating System (CRS) to help lower flood‑insurance rates.
Zoning official Rachel Berry presented the program and said Charlotte County has already adopted the plan; staff recommended the board forward a recommendation to city council. Berry said the program contains nine key informational topics residents should know: know your flood hazard, ensure your property is insured, protect people (evacuation and warnings), protect property (flood protection steps), build responsibly (meet elevation and code requirements), protect natural floodplain functions, know the cost of a flood (deductibles and coverage limits), plan for sea‑level rise, and prepare for hurricanes.
“The program is the mechanism the city uses to document community outreach and public information for the CRS,” Berry said; adopting the county program and formally recommending it to council is intended to help maintain or improve Punta Gorda’s CRS rating and associated National Flood Insurance Program premium discounts.
A motion to recommend that city council adopt the resolution passed unanimously with no public comment. The board recorded the recommendation and closed the item.
