The board approved the district’s updated statement of benefits for multiple employee groups after a presentation by district staff that clarified the scope of changes and denied social-media claims about large-scale cuts.
The presenter said the changes do not include an across-the-board raise and that many adjustments are administrative clarifications or reclassifications. Key items described include updated holiday dates for the new fiscal year; an adjustment to sick-leave severance limits for certain employee groups (paid from cash balance); removal of a 403(b) matching requirement to increase employee flexibility at no additional cost to the district; an additional contribution for the associate superintendent position; and a shift from mileage reimbursement to a mileage allowance for positions requiring high-frequency travel to reduce administrative burden.
The presenter said the statement of benefits document also reflects position-name and step changes, the addition of preschool instructor positions to support preschool growth, reclassification of a central-office secretarial reduction, food-service staff for a new academic pavilion cafe (funded from the food service budget), and substitute pay/incentives tied to required training. He emphasized that reductions in central-office secretarial and administrative positions made funds available and that the update “does not take money away” from employees.
Board member remarks included a request for the approximate total number of employees; staff answered that the count including substitutes is about 1,400. A board member also asked staff to correct misinformation circulating in the community; another board member thanked the presenter and the committee for clarifying changes. A motion to approve the statement of benefits was made, seconded and approved by voice vote (“the ayes have it”).
