Anchorage School District details Mount Spur and wildfire preparedness, plans June exercise

Jared Woody, an emergency-operations staff member with the Anchorage School District, told the school board the district has updated its emergency plans and is coordinating daily with municipal, state and federal partners to prepare for an eruptive event at Mount Spur and an elevated wildfire season.
Woody said the district’s emergency operations plan (EOP) serves as “our district wide kind of umbrella plan,” and that individual school emergency action plans (EAPs) are reviewed annually under state statute. He said the district finalized drafts of the EOP and EAPs last summer and that the emergency operations center (EOC) plan was updated earlier this year.
The district stressed that decisions affecting daily instruction would be based on ash-fall projections rather than color-coded aviation alerts alone. Woody explained that the FAA-coloured system used for aviation “is established internationally for aviation” and that the ash-fall projections and the words that follow the color (for example, “watch” or “warning”) are what matter for ground-level effects.
