Council elects Jeff Taylor vice mayor after debate over duties and availability

The city charter specifies the vice mayor’s formal duty to preside when the mayor is absent, but councilmembers disagreed about informal expectations tied to the position, such as representing the city at daytime meetings, convening with the city manager and meeting outside stakeholders. One councilmember said availability for daytime regional or federal meetings has practical importance; another observed the charter does not enumerate those duties.
Councilmember Taylor accepted the nomination, saying he would “work whatever way I can to help people out” and represent the city as needed. Some councilmembers said longevity on council and ability to fulfill outside commitments should guide the selection; others emphasized that any councilmember who accepts the role must be prepared to step in for the mayor at events and meetings.
A motion was made and seconded to nominate Councilmember Taylor; the nomination carried 4–3. Councilmembers who dissented said they preferred continuity or alternate rotation traditions but were outvoted. The council did not make additional changes to the vice mayor’s formal duties or to the charter; the item was a selection only.
