Lubbock Independent School District trustees voted 6-0, with Trustee Curry recused, to hire Jason Sims as the athletic coordinator and head football coach for Monterey High School following an executive session held under Texas Government Code Chapter 551.
The hire was approved by motion and second after the board returned from closed session. The presiding board member moved, “I move that we hire Jason Sims as the athletic coordinator and head football coach for Monterey High School.” The motion carried after an affirmative voice vote and a recorded tally of 6 yes and 1 recusal.
Jason Sims addressed the board after the vote, saying, “I just wanted to quickly say thank you so much for this opportunity. I'd like to introduce my wife, Tara, and my daughter, Presley. I wanna also thank coach Meeks for this opportunity. Doctor Rolo, thank you for trusting me. Thank you, coaches, for being here.” Sims told trustees he was “excited for Monterey High School” and said he was “ready to get to work.”
Board members offered brief congratulations after the appointment. One trustee said, “Coach, congratulations. Welcome,” and another added, “to you and your family. God bless you.” A district official addressed as Dr. Rolo thanked Coach Sams for recent leadership at Monterey and said the district looked forward to the program’s continued progress.
The board noted on the record that Trustee Curry recused from the vote; no additional personnel details, start date, or contract terms were announced at the meeting. After the vote the board opened the podium for photos and brief remarks.
