Deanna Dunning appointed to Guthrie Ward 1 seat after public interviews

The Guthrie City Council on June 17 interviewed three applicants for the vacant Ward 1 seat and unanimously appointed Deanna Dunning to fill the position through May 2027.

The council followed a public interview format in which each applicant introduced themselves and answered a standard set of questions. Applicant Franklin Danley said, “I am here for service,” and described prior work in group homes and community service. Deanna Dunning told the council she had applied after serving on the city’s capital improvements (CIP) committee, which she said exposed her to infrastructure projects and budget trade-offs; she said her CIP experience “sparked my interest in trying to get involved further.” Former councilmember Ed Wood also interviewed and described his prior council experience and support for maintaining the city’s historic downtown.

Council members asked each candidate identical questions about the three roles of a legislator (policy, oversight and constituency services), approach to appeals from subordinate boards and priorities for the city (infrastructure, economic growth and public safety). Candidates emphasized infrastructure, water resources and community engagement as priorities.

After interviews and brief deliberation the council made a motion and voted to appoint Dunning to the open Ward 1 seat; the vote was unanimous. The mayor then administered the oath of office to Dunning in the council chamber.

Councilmembers thanked all applicants for their willingness to serve and encouraged continued involvement by those not selected. Dunning will join the council immediately and will participate in upcoming orientation and regular council work.
