Bluff City board approves first reading to buy 100 water meters

Officials noted the town has been replacing meters on an ongoing basis and that last year the town purchased 50 replacement meters. The board discussed that roughly a dozen meters are currently nonfunctional, though several speakers said they could not provide an exact count on the record. Officials also said they aim to keep a supply of replacement meters on hand to reduce adjustments and administrative work when meters fail.
Alderwoman Payne moved approval of first reading; Alderman Johnson seconded. The roll call vote recorded yes votes from Alderman Payne, Alderman Malone, Alderman Keys, Alderman Hayes and Alderman Johnson. The motion passed on first reading.
The ordinance as read references amending the appropriation ordinance for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, and identifies the appropriation change to the water and sewer line item. The ordinance states it will take effect after final passage.
The board did not set a date for second reading during the special meeting. Staff indicated the purchase would be completed from the water and sewer reserve fund prior to the fiscal-year end.
