Planning staff told the Sierra Madre Planning Commission the City Council will consider a discretionary demolition permit at an upcoming meeting and asked staff for information about potential historic resources โ specifically properties 75 years and older โ that could be affected by a recent fire.
Director Lynn briefed commissioners that several residents expressed concern about replacing windows and vents and that council asked staff to outline how those potential historic resources could be impacted by repairs or home-hardening measures. Lynn said council was worried about imposing additional burdens on homeowners who want to harden their properties for safety.
Commissioner discussion also requested that staff seek City Council guidance on conversions of historic houses to condominiums, citing uncertainty whether code and policy written decades earlier anticipated current conversion practices. Director Lynn said she would follow up with the city manager to request that guidance.
Staff reported the demolition-permit item will be on the council agenda this coming Tuesday and that staff will provide the requested inventories and analysis for council consideration. No formal action was taken by the commission on this report item.
