Chief Deputy Director Lisa Renati told the board the agency has filled two vacancies as part of a multi‑year strategic plan to strengthen the BOE workforce and that the current vacancy rate is about 9 percent.
"A core goal of our 5 year strategic plan for the agency has been developing and strengthening BOE's workforce. Since my last report, we have filled 2 vacant positions," Renati said. She added that one hire is new to the board and the other is an internal promotion and that supervisors and managers are working on training staff for expanded responsibilities.
Renati told members the agency is actively recruiting for tax auditor positions and has temporary permission to use the tax auditor classification while recruiting. She described the classification project timeline: staff expect an initial step this fall, then approvals from CalHR and placement on the State Personnel Board calendar to make permanent classification changes, with a hopeful full outcome by 2026.
Budget and year‑end activity: Renati said year‑end budget activities are underway and based on current projections the agency expects to be "right under budget." "We are following [the] budget letter from the governor, that says we have to make sure everything's mission critical," she said.
No formal action was taken; the item was an operational update and staff offered to answer members' questions.
