Committee hears about school safety trainings; tabletop exercise set for Sept. 18

School safety and emergency management training for Cross Plains schools was discussed at the Public Safety Committee meeting on June 17, including regular staff trainings, an annual public presentation, and planned emergency exercises later this year.
A school-safety presenter described a “hold” procedure used at local schools to clear hallways while classrooms continue normal operations during medical or behavior incidents and said protocols and classroom forms are posted on the district web page. The presenter said they aim to deliver two public presentations each year and to provide classroom-level protocol forms to help parents and staff understand school response procedures.
The committee was told the department schedules annual in-service training for officers and school staff; upcoming trainings include ground-defense instruction in August in partnership with a 608 jujitsu program, a tabletop exercise focused on a simulated F1 tornado scheduled for Sept. 18, and scenario-based gymnasium training at Glacier Creek later in the year. Mount Horeb — cited for having handled a prior active threat incident — has offered to provide training drawing on its live experience.
Committee members and staff said the tabletop exercise is intended to be a planning-level event with the village board and other department heads invited as spectators; the village plans to stage larger, full- or half-scale exercises after additional planning and funding. The committee did not adopt new school-safety policies at this meeting; presenters described existing protocols and scheduled training events.
Presenters encouraged residents to consult the district web page for posted protocols and classroom forms and said they will continue outreach to keep the public informed about school safety procedures.
