Captain Allred told the council that Officer Stevens, who is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and serves as a combat medic in that role, used his medical training while on duty to assess the situation and perform CPR before fire department medics arrived. “Officer Stevens took to his training and experience as a combat medic, assist assess the situation and begin performing CPR,” Captain Allred said. “Before [Gadsden] fire medics could get there, Officer Stevens revived that person, brought a pulse back, and was able to get that person breathing again, ultimately saving that person’s life.”
Representatives from the mayor’s office joined the council in presenting the recognition and praising the city’s first responders. A mayor’s office representative said the city is “blessed” by its employees and first responders and expressed appreciation for the training and willingness of officers and firefighters.
Officer Stevens said he started with the Gadsden Police Department in January (year not specified in the transcript) and received congratulations from council members. The council recessed the proclamations and commendations segment after the presentation and moved on to business.
