Finance committee reports first-draft tax budget and forecasts $1.4 million surplus; tax budget public hearing set

The finance, budget, audit and claims committee reported progress on the city’s 2026 tax budget and other administrative items and forecast a near-term surplus.
Chairperson Mister Jeff Curtin told council the auditor’s office has a first draft of the 2026 tax budget and aims to submit it to council for a first reading on June 24. The committee report says the tax budget is due July 15, 2025. Curtin added that the treasurer’s office has hiring exams scheduled and that the auditor’s office is preparing a purchasing-card (P‑card) manual.
The committee noted the city is currently forecasting a surplus of $1,400,000 above earlier estimates, based on current revenues. No claims were reported at the committee meeting. Council accepted the finance committee report unanimously. A public hearing on the tax budget is scheduled for the June 24 council meeting at 7:30 p.m., where the tax budget will be presented for first reading.
