The Statesboro Mayor and Council opened a public hearing on the first reading of an ordinance to amend the city—s Unified Development Code and moved the measure to a second reading.
"This is one of many iterations of our amendments to the Unified Development Code. We believe we've gotten to the point where this is something we can improve," planning staff member Justin said, adding that the changes aim to reduce the need for special service districts, remove obsolete language such as chapter 54, improve amenity requirements and create new language for tiny homes.
A member of the public spoke in support, saying the proposed code changes would make the process more efficient. No members of the Home Builders Association were present to comment, the planner noted.
After closing the hearing, the council had no substantive discussion and voted to move the ordinance forward to a second reading.
Why it matters: changes to the Unified Development Code govern land uses, housing types and permitting processes; adding tiny-home language and updating amenity requirements could affect future development applications and housing options.
Next steps: staff will prepare the ordinance for the council's second reading and possible adoption.
