Burke County Schools staff told the board they plan to change the employee payroll schedule to a single monthly payday on the 15th, a move officials say will reduce confusion about irregular pay dates.
The proposal, described in the meeting by a finance staff member, would set the 15th of each month as the regular pay date; “if the fifteenth falls on the weekend or a holiday, we'll pay the business day before that,” the presenter said. The district plans to avoid any full five-week pay periods under the new schedule and expects to implement the change with the July 15 payroll if board members and leaders concur.
Payroll staffer Karen Garcia ran a successful off-calendar payroll during spring break, the presenter told the board. That experience increased district confidence in processing payroll on a fixed monthly date even when the 15th falls on a non-business day.
No formal board vote was recorded on the change during the meeting; presenters said they would inform system leaders at an upcoming planning meeting and expected to begin the new schedule July 15.
Board members and staff said the change is intended to make pay dates easier for employees to remember and reduce months with a perceived five-pay period.
