Why it matters: Transportation issues have been a recurring concern for parents and board members. Trustees said the district must provide clearer communication about changes to routes and show how recent steps will reduce repeated problems before the start of school in August.
Board member David asked that the board change the agenda item from “approval” to “acknowledgment of receipt” because trustees do not review the actual route maps before voting; legal counsel and staff said DESE language requires routes to be approved by the local board by October, with any revisions submitted by June 30, making the vote a statutory formality.
Staff described multiple actions intended to improve service: a pilot of a parent tracking app this summer (tested with ESY students), plans to give buildings temporary dummy accounts to receive bus alerts while app access is corrected, a review of route efficiency led by District administrators, and an agreement to bring the transportation leadership team to the board for a workshop. Staff also described steps to address driver recruitment and retention, including a negotiated pay increase in the 4894 support staff agreement that will raise base and top pay and reduce steps, and a planned “stay interview” process to diagnose turnover at the bus garage.
Board members asked when a formalized plan would be available; staff said the district expects to present a written plan by July. Trustees acknowledged the urgency, given that buses begin regular routes in August.
The board took a voice vote to approve the final bus routes as presented. Staff committed to an early July report outlining specific communication changes and operational steps.
