Northeast ISD approves school-district teaching permit for athletic trainer to teach sports medicine

The Northeast Independent School District on June 19 approved a school-district teaching permit for a high-school assistant athletic trainer who will teach sports medicine, voting 7–0 to grant the permit.
Shaila Wooden delivered the item to the board and said state rules allow an individual who does not hold a standard teaching certificate but does hold the athletic trainer license to be issued a district permit to teach. "The individual does hold all the required qualifications to be issued this permit," she said, and noted the last time the board approved a similar permit was in June of the prior year.
Board members asked about how many similar permits the district currently has and the pathway to full certification. Wooden said the district currently employs seven individuals under similar permits, with two athletic trainers at each high school. She explained permits are issued to individuals under current code and that staff submit permit approvals to the commissioner. She also described avenues for employees to pursue standard certification if their assignments change or they teach additional courses that meet alternative certification requirements.
The motion to approve the permit was moved by Ms. Landry, seconded by Ms. Shelton, and passed unanimously.
