The Columbia County Planning Commission voted to approve a provisional home‑occupation permit for Farm Fresh (Gunter Family Farms) to use an accessory building as a commissary for a food truck at 3306 (transcript variance) Tom Bartels/Burrows/Burns Road in Appling.
County planner Danielle explained that state and health‑department requirements generally require a commercial kitchen to be separate from the residence, and that the property’s acreage and accessory building make a provisional home occupation the appropriate mechanism for permitting the commissary use. Danielle said an existing provisional home occupation (Hannah’s Closet) operates on the property using the same building; county rules permit parking of a single commercial vehicle with a home occupation.
Applicant Gary Gunter said he intends to split the existing 30‑by‑shed so one portion will be used for food preparation and will seek health‑department approval: “We’re just gonna separate the shed in half and get it approved by the health department,” Gunter said. He described the concept as a farm‑fresh, locally sourced menu.
A commissioner moved to approve the provisional home occupation; the motion passed on a recorded voice vote of 5‑0. Staff will condition any future operation on health‑department approval and standard county permitting requirements.
