Board backs legislative changes on exam requirements and scope language; bill advances to committee

The Podiatric Medical Board of California voted June 18, 2025, to support a legislative measure referenced in the meeting as "15 o 1" that staff said moved June 11 to the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.

Jason (legislative presenter) told the board the measure includes several substantive changes under consideration. He said the bill would add the words “pediatrics surgery” as part of a title listed in Business and Professions Code 2474, eliminate what staff called the 10‑year Part 3 exam requirement for licensure across jurisdictions, and remove or avoid the word “ancillary” so that doctors of podiatric medicine would not be classified as ancillary health‑care providers.

"Second thing is the elimination of the 10 year exam that's required, part 3 ... that will not be required," Jason said. He also described the change to the title language in the Business and Professions Code and noted the bill's movement in the legislative process. Brian (legislative staff) provided additional document attachments and analysis for the board to review.

A board member moved to support the measure as presented and the motion passed. Board members also received a regulatory update saying disciplinary guideline changes and certain record language updates are progressing; staff said no board action was needed for those items at this time.

The legislative presenter said the bill’s progression to committee keeps the board on track for upcoming sunset-related deadlines and that staff will continue to monitor and report legislative developments to the board.
