Parametrics Consulting briefed the Springdale Town Council on May 14 about interim findings from a smart‑travel alternatives study intended to reduce single‑occupancy vehicle trips to Springdale. Town staff said a final report is expected in June or July and invited council feedback.
Survey results showed about 112 responses with roughly 65% from visitors and the rest from locals; more than 75% of respondents said they were likely to consider shuttles, walking or biking. The consultant’s evaluation ranked strategies by criteria that included cost and speed of implementation. Short‑term measures that scored highly and are already in motion include green conflict striping for bike lanes at key intersections, repainting thermoplastic crosswalk markings, adding bicycle parking and implementing cashless payments on SunTran.
Longer‑term or costlier items received more cautious council responses. The consultant identified a park‑and‑ride lot in Springdale as a top parking strategy; councilmembers questioned feasibility because of land constraints and potential congestion from a lot at the south end of town. Council members suggested examining county or Rockville locations for park‑and‑ride options and asked staff to remove a Springdale‑based park‑and‑ride from the draft recommendations unless implementation logistics and land availability were identified.
Council asked staff to circulate the consultant slides and to return final recommendations in June or July after incorporating council feedback. Tom Danzy said many short‑term recommendations are already underway and coordination continues with UDOT, Zion National Park and transit providers.
