Library volunteers brief council on summer programs and push for Olson home as permanent facility

A volunteer representing Alpine’s library told the council the summer reading programs and story times are growing and urged the city to approve repurposing the Olson home as a permanent library while volunteers explore temporary leased space.
Jen Wadsworth, a volunteer library organizer, addressed the council during public comment to report growth in summer programming and to renew a request that the city approve use of the Olson home for a permanent library location.
Wadsworth said the summer season has shown strong family participation and that the library added lending hours, two story times (including a “stories with grandpa” session led by a retired Alpine School District educator), a summer reading program and a journalism club aimed at storytelling and civic awareness. The volunteer said the popularity of the programs highlights the need for a stable, welcoming facility.
Wadsworth told council volunteers are actively seeking alternatives while the Olson home remains the priority because of its historical character and eligibility for grants; she said the group also has identified a property on 100 South that meets historic-preservation and parking needs and is exploring a short-term lease with a local commercial space to bridge the gap while a permanent location is negotiated.
When asked if a local business was already committed to a temporary lease, Wadsworth said no lease is finalized; she said a commercial space did become available and volunteers pursued it but would report back if an agreement is reached.
The presentation was informational; no council action was taken during the public-comment period.
