The accompanying zoning item assigns AG (agricultural), MR (medium-density residential), MUR (mixed-use residential) and CB (community business) to the newly annexed land.
Dr. Aldridge said he opposed annexation because several residents had expressed opposition and said, "I have been a firm believer that annexation is a great thing unless we have residents who are opposed. And so for that reason, I will be a no vote today." Dr. Emmons said public comments recently came from people not living in the annexed area and cited a city attorney verification that there is no property-rights loss; Emmons said he would vote yes. Councilman White noted historical context, citing an early-1990s intervention by then‑Governor Sullivan to assist residents in that area.
The committee voted by voice to recommend approval of the annexation and the zoning; the record shows Dr. Aldridge voting no. The items will go to the full City Council for final action on Monday night.
