Council presses Lee County on long timeline for beach restroom repairs; considers escalating options

Council members said they had heard the countys timeline for repairs could be as long as two years and asked staff and County liaisons to determine the cause and whether the timeline could be shortened. City Manager Chris and Public Works staff member Arlene were asked to contact the county to identify whether the delay results from ADA requirements, FEMA reimbursement issues or other permitting or funding hurdles. "Two years is nuts," a council member said during the discussion.
Staff reported the county had noted ADA compliance work and FEMA reimbursement discussions as part of the schedule considerations and that porta-potties are in place at some locations. Council directed staff to begin outreach to county leadership and state representatives as appropriate, and to provide options including asking whether the city could fund repairs up front and be reimbursed later.
No formal interlocal or funding agreement was approved at the meeting; council instructed staff to start dialogue with Lee County and report back with the cause of the delay and potential remedies.
