City updates 10-year water facilities work plan; staff to transmit amendment to state

Bonita Springs City Council received and voted to transmit an update to its 10-year Water Facilities Work Plan required under Florida law, after Community Development staff coordinated with Bonita Springs Utilities and the regional water management district.
The update matters because state statute requires local governments to align comprehensive plans with water management district supply plans; the work plan documents potable-supply capacity and planned facilities that affect growth and utility planning.
Jacqueline Ginson of Community Development told the council local governments must evaluate comprehensive plans after water management districts adopt water-supply plans every five years, and then coordinate with utility providers to confirm available potable-water facilities for a planning horizon. "We coordinated with Bonita Springs Utilities," Ginson said, adding that Bonita Springs Utilities and a private provider serving parts of the city supplied information for the updated work plan.
Staff said the updated water facilities supply work plan will go to the state through the expedited-review process and that staff will return for adoption after any agency comments. Council voted to transmit the amendment.
No immediate rate changes or capital appropriations were proposed at the hearing; staff described the item as a statutory, procedural update that confirms the city has adequate water-supply capacity for the planning horizon when accounting for known facilities and capital improvement plans.
